Hi, Cathy, Sherranlynn, and Carol (and casual readers):

Well, I *am* a Settle! <BG> Let me start by saying you wouldn't have to
throw a rock very far in the 1800's to hit a Mary Settle in Fayette Co. Let
me see if I can get these 3 Mary Settle's straightened out:

Mary Ann Settle
d/o Abram (Abraham) Settle and Abagail (Abigail) Curran
born April 4 1821 in Greenbrier Co., VA(WV)
died June 21 1896 in Clifton (now Pratt), Kanawha Co., WV
married July 14 1846
husband: John Brown Johnson, son of William Johnson Jr. and Nancy Ann Simms
(William Johnson Jr. was son of William Johnson Sr., Revolutionary War
soldier)

Mary Ann Elizabeth Pennell Settle
d/o Abner Settle and Nancy Pennell
Abner and Abram Settle were brothers, making Mary Ann Settle Johnson and
Mary Ann Elizabeth Pennell Settle Johnson first cousins (and I don't even
want to get into the relation this made their kids to each other since
William Johnson Jr. was the uncle of Mary Ann Elizabeth Pennell Settle's
husband)
born April 1 1810 in Culpeper Co., VA
died October 29 1905 in Fayette Co., WV (Cathy: this death date is from the
Bible record of John Johnson, now owned by one of the descendants)
married August 9 1829 (again from the Bible record)
husband: John Johnson Jr., son of Rev. John Johnson and Elizabeth Sims, and
grandson of William Johnson Sr.

I'm going to throw in a little Sims info before I go on, so you can see
just what a tangle this is:
Elizabeth Sims and Mildred Sims (below) were daughters of James Sims by his
first wife--and first cousin--Elizabeth Sims. I don't know if Nancy Ann
Simms was another daughter or other relation; I'll make some inquiries.

Mary Ann Settle
d/o Joel Settle and Mildred Sims (Joel Settle was a son of Abner Settle and
Nancy Pennell, so Mary Ann Elizabeth Pennell Settle Johnson was sister of
Joel and aunt of Mary Ann Settle Arthur)
born ca1827 in Nicholas Co., VA(WV)
died August 31 1894 in Fayette Co., WV
married Henry Arthur and unfortunately I don't have a date. I'll make some
inquiries here also.

Mary Ann Settle Arthur, BTW, was sister of my g-g grandfather, the
oft-married (and probably bigamist, trigamist?) James Wesley Settle. I
descend from his first (that we know of) wife, Melvina Blake.

If you have any questions, I'll do my best to come up with answers.
