Item Description:
This is a large leather bound family Bible with decorative color
frontispiece illustration and a beautiful decorative family record section
between the Old and New Testament. The Bible was published in Philadelphia
by Jas. B. Smith and Company in 1859. Of historical significance, this is a
Virginia family Bible, believed to have come from the Shenandoah Valley near
Roanoke, of the Campbell family. The births, marriages and deaths recorded
in the family section of the Bible start at 1800 with the birth of Joseph
Campbell (born in October) and the last entry is a death in 1912. The Bible
is leather bound. The hinge clasp is missing. It has spine repair in that
the spine had obviously been severely chipped and damaged. The Bible is
rubbed. It has marbleized end papers, some of the front papers are ragged
on the edges for the first few pages. It should be noted that the first
twenty pages are missing from this Bible. It starts with chapter 36 of
Genesis. The Bible includes numerous full-page steel engravings that are
exquisite. There is minor foxing throughout. It is a large format Bible.
It is decorative - a piece of Virginia history. Anyone in the Campbell
family should love to have this. (b938)
