Coincidentally, I recently had the opportunity to browse through Hu Maxwell
& H.L. Swisher's History of Hampshire Co., and noted down some info on the
Springfield Presbyterian Church. It was part of the Winchester Presbytery
(which included five ministers and 16 churches). Rev. William H. Foote
took over as a minister in this presbytery in 1819. Before 1833 all the
Presbyterian churches in the county were included in the Mt. Bethel
congregation. In 1833 Mt. Bethel became the Romney congregation and Foote
had leave to form separate congregations at Springfield, Mt. Bethel, North
River, and Patterson's Creek. Foote was also principal of Romney Academy
from 1826 for many years, became principal of Romney Classical Institute
until 1849, and established the Potomac Seminary in 1850. He was one of
the founders of Springfield Academy (1854), too.

This is probably more than you actually wanted to know about Wm. H.
Foote! I was curious about him, since I had noticed a number (well, at
least two!) of Springfield children who had been named Wm. H. Foote
_____whatever. Foote wrote a couple of books, Sketches of North Carolina,
Historical and Biographical (1846) and Sketches of Virginia, Historical and
Biographical (1850, 1855). Died 1859.
