Hi, Lowell! I saw your surname "PANKAKE" and I have an ancestor who married a Pancake/Pankake of Hampshire County in the early 1800's. Her name if I am not mistaken was Susan HASS dau of Peter and Mary BAER HASS early settlers of Hampshire County. Peter Hass's father Christian Hass/Haas was the original early settler having acquired land due to his service in the Revolution. I believe he owned at one time over 680 acres of land in that area. My gggrandmother was married to Israel MAYBERRY on Mar 27, 1827 in Hampshire County. He was first a Tax Assessor for Allegany Co., Cumberland, Maryland. Later he became a magistrate for that county. Something happened prior to the 1850 Census since my gggrandmother Catherine Hass Mayberry must have died since she was not included with the members of her family my ggrandpa was Francis aka Frank Mayberry who was residing in the household of Susan Taylor as a 16 year old farm hand or laborer. Many years later he was found again re!
siding in Grand River Twp., Cass Co., Missouri living next door to his boyhood friend Simon D. Taylor also of Hampshire County and son of Susan Taylor. My ggrandpa disappeared sometime around after 1872 thru 1878 since my ggrandma remarried to a Doctor N. McGill of Cass County. There were several PANCAKE surnames listed in various records in that county, apparently they were migrants from Hampshire County back in the 1860's.
I am missing information on siblings of my ggrandfather Francis aka Frank Mayberry. Names are: Mary age 21; Thomas age 19; Peter age 16; Sarah age 13; as listed on the 1850 Census and living in the grandparents household (Peter & Mary Baer HASS). Also, would like to know more about Mary Baer Hass, who were her parents and siblings. My MAYBERRY's were mostly located in Maryland and Pennsylvania in the early 1800's, as I found Israel listed on the 1830 Census at Franklin Twp/Co., Pa. I believe he was a member of the Mayberry's that were involved in the manufacture of Iron. I saw that there was a Thomas Mayberry named as owning more than 300 acres of land between the forks at Harpers Ferry
and that he (Thomas) was involved in the Iron Mfg trade around that time. George Mayberry is considered as a the father of Israel Mayberry on the Don Collins website at: http://www.homepages.rootsweb.com/~mabry/imm_pa.html
I have also found that at one time Israel Mayberry was a member of the 3rd Regt (Stembel's) Maryland Militia, and am trying to locate information on his service in that organization also. He may have participated in the defense of Baltimore.
I visited Romney back in April 2001 but, only for a couple of days. Not enough time to do any serious searching. I plan on visiting again pretty soon. If you are in the area I would appreciate any pointers on where to search for information on my ancestors. Thanks, for any help you can provide. I would appreciate it very much.
