The information that you seek is housed in the Library of Virginia under
Public Works (Northwest Turnpike records). These records are voluminous,
including tolls, traffic counts, payrolls of persons making repairs, etc.
Also, there are 60 volumes of field notes by engineer C. Crozet who was
hired by Virginia. Crozet was Napoleon's chief engineer. You could spend a
month in these records without reading everything available, including
sectional maps that pinpoint the residences along the way (1820s-1840s).

Could anyone give me information as to where toll booths were located on
this turnpike and who inn keepers and toll colklectors were? Thank you,
John McGee Rogers
