Linda, I meant to reply to your post also. I am glad Cheryl
sent her reply, it reminded me.

My g, g, grandfather was John FRIEND. The Friend family
used the same given names over and over again, making it
difficult for each person to with the same name to
distinguish himself from the others. Because of this my
John Friend signed his name "John Friend of N". Meaning he
was the son of Nicholas.
