Guidelines for writing biographies for the sesquicentinnial history book of
Hancock County.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
YOUR BUSINESS IS IMPORTANT
The Tri-State Genealogical and Historical Society is planning a
genealogical history of Hancock County in honor of the county's
sesquicentinnial (1848-1998). Our goal is to preserve the unique history
of our county.
Part of the book will be dedicated to the businesses, churches and
organizations in the county. Whether your business, church or organization
is new to the area or has been here for generations, you will want your
story to be included in this publication.
Here are some ideas for writing your story:
1. Give the name of your business, church or organization.
2. Tell when the business was founded an by whom.
3. Write a biographical sketch of the founder. If you are new to the
county, tell where you lived before and why you moved here. If your
family settled here generations ago, identify where they originated;
when they came and why they stayed.
HOW LONG SHOULD MY STORY BE?
Stories of 500 words or less will be printed FREE. All words over 500 will
be printed at a cost of 10 cents per word.
HOW SHOULD I TYPE MY STORY?
Stories should be double-spaced (preferably typed) on 8 1/2 X 11" paper.
Each story must be accompanied by a cover sheet containing the following
information:
(1) Date of Submission
(2) Title of Submission (must be used in all future correspondence)
(3) Name, Address and Phone Number of Submitter
(4) E-Mail Address (if available)
WHAT ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHS?
You don't have to publish a picture, but remember "a picture is worth a
thousand words". Photos can be of a present establishment or an ancestral
one; today's owner, pastor or officer(s). Do not send irreplaceable
pictures-- send a copy instead.
Lightly print your name and address on the back of the picture. On a
swparate paper, identify the building and if possible where and when the
picture was taken. Pictures must not exceed 3" X 4" and will be published
at a cost of $10 to be paid by the submitter.
HOW DO I SUBMIT MY STORY?
Submit your story by mail to TSGHS P.O. Box 454, Newell, WV 26050. Text
submitted via e-mail, PC of Macintosh disks is very welcome. Just be sure
when sending files via disk, that they have been converted to an ASCII or
RTF file format to be accessible by a generic word processor. Graphics
cannot be accepted on disk. Items will not be returned unless accompanied
by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
You may e-mail your information to or
ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY AUGUST 1, 1998.
Assistance in writing your story can be obtained by calling TSGHS at (304)
387-2467.
Thank you for your interest. Happy Writing!
The sheet for individuals reads the same with the following exceptions:
Here are some ideas for writing your family story:
WHERE DO I START?
Give a background on your family. If you are new to Hancock County, tell
where you lived before, why you moved here and significant events in your
life. If your family settled here generations ago, identify where they
originated, when they came; why they stayed and important events
surrounding their lives.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I WRITE ABOUT?
Tell about your family. Give dates and places of marriages, births, deaths
and always include maiden names with surnames. Tell about childhood
experiences, schooldays, residence and hobbies. Remember to include
military services--branch, rank and dates of service.
