NEW CUMBERLAND -- A tour of Homes, sponsored by the New Cumberland Area
Preservation Society, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the New Cumberland Historic Landmark
Commission Project.
The society is working to have area historic districts nominated to the
National Register of Historic Places. The Society was awarded a $2,000
federal Certified Local Government Grant through the West Virginia Archives
and History Commission. Work on the project should be completed soon,
according to commission members.
Cost for the three-home tour is $5.
Tour-takers will begin at the Marshall McNeil home, 1008 Ridge Ave. Parking
is available at the church next door. This home was built in 1887 by Sen.
Oliver Sheridan Marshall, and the bricks and fireplace tiling were made
locally. The hom's wood, including mahogany, oak and cherry, came from the
Marshall farm near New Manchester and is in its original condition.
The Atkinson House, also on Ridge Avenue, was built in 1867. The
Italian-style home features a belvedere. It is being restored by Nancy and
Mitch Nixon.
The Victorian home of Maxine and Bob Mills, Ridge Avenue, features a
sweeping porch. The home was built circa 1900.
Demonstrations of techniques used in repair and restoration will be
presented, according to officials. Also, society members will be on hand
to answer questions.
~~~Note: I am not sure that I can scan these images, but would be happy to
photocopy the page from the newspaper, if these are homes of any of your
ancestors.
Happy Hunting,
Janet
