I would be interested in learning who created this map that you obtained
from Family History. All maps that I have seen back to the 1700s indicate
that the state of Virginia claimed all lands east of the Ohio River and the
river itself making their claim extend to the western bank of the river.
There is some great software available from AniMap that shows the formation
of the counties from the very early days of this country. You can read
about it at http://www.goldbug.com/AniMap.html It provides some of the
best maps that I have ever seen to show how the counties were formed.
This is not to say that some records that should belong in Jackson County
would not be found across the river in Meigs County. In the search for my
own great grandfather Shockey's marriage, I was surprised to finally find
it in Meigs County. I believe the circuit riding preachers is one of the
best reasons for this happening. My mother's grandfather, John C
Richardson, was a Baptist minister whose circuit covered from Ripley to
Elizabeth in Wirt County and to Pond Creek in southern Wood County and this
resulted in records being transposed between these three counties.
