I am researching the Dunlap family of Lincoln County, WV. The line begins with my gggggrandfather Samuel L. Dunlap who married Isabel Farley in VA/now WV in 1826. Samuel was supposedly born in NC.

One of their sons was Piner, born in VA/WV, who married Elizabeth Holstein in 1853. Piner and Elizabeth, who settled in Lincoln Co., had a daughter Arabella, who had a son, Allen J. Dunlap, out of wedlock abt. 1873. Allen was my ggrandfather but I don't hold out much hope of ever identifying Allen's father.

Familys in those days didn't talk about things like "illegitimate children." Family lore has it that his father was a Looney or a Mooney but I have nothing else to go on. The Lincoln Co. courthouse burned in 1909, complicating matters even further. Some time after Allen's birth, Arabella married Burwell Holstein and had several more children.

I would be ever-so-grateful to anyone who has information about Samuel's and/or Isabel's parents and especially about my mysterious gggrandfather, the father of Allen J. Dunlap.

Thanks!

Ginny Painter
