Dorna,

A gedcom file is a special file format which allows the transferring of
family tree files from one family tree program to another family tree
program or from one user of a family tree program to another user of the
same program. If you try looking at a gedcom file in notepad or wordpad,
the text will look all jumbled together with some machine language signs
included. If you convert it to html then it will look like a text document
when viewed on the web. If you import a gedcom file into your family tree
program, such as Family Tree Maker, then you will have a new FTM file and
can view the individual records of each person listed... or use that file
as you use your other FTM files.

I was using Personal Ancestor File for storing my individual family info.
When I got FTM I transferred my PAF files to FTM by exporting them from PAF
to gedcom and then importing the gedcom files into FTM. So that saved me
from having to type all that information into a new program.

I met a guy about 2 years ago on here who had a gedcom file on a surname I
was working on. This file was 9mb and I was having problems getting the
file thru email because it was so large. So he sent me an url where he had
the file stored on the web. I went there and downloaded it. I then
imported it into my family tree program.

If he had had this file converted to html I dont think I would have been
able to import it into my family tree program. It would have had to have
been the gedcom file itself before I could have imported it.

And I'm not sure Dorna but I think that you are using the easiest way to
convert your family files to html.

Donna
