I was born in Raleigh County and did most of my growing up in Fayette
County...not so far from Mercer, but I had never heard of this tradition until now.
So I did a bit of searching and found that it is reputed to be of Scottish
origin and is supposed to bring good luck. The butter makes the birthday person
slippery so bad luck won't stick to them.
