Alice,

Some of the Monongalia Co tax lists are included in Melba Pender Zinn's
11 volumes (so far) of Monongalia County, (West) Virginia Records of the
District, Superior and County Courts.

The law requiring assessment of taxes was enacted by the Virginia General
Assembly in 1782. There are two different tax lists: personal property
and land tax (real estate). No taxes were collected in 1808 or 1864.

The personal property tax lists for Monongalia and Preston Counties are
available on microfilm at the West Virginia Archives and the Library of
Virginia. The land tax records for Monongalia and Preston Counties are
in bound volumes at the West Virginia Archives. The microfilm for the
land tax books that the LDS church filmed is at the West Virginia
University library.

Monongalia Co was formed in 1776 but no tax records are available until
1782 when the law was passed. Tax records for Preston Co begin in 1818
when it was created from Monongalia Co.

The land tax records for Preston Co 1818-1820 were lost or misfiled so
the personal property tax records were substituted for them in the first
volume of land tax records which includes the years 1821-1837. The
personal property tax records for Preston Co are available on microfilm
from 1821-1860. The personal property tax lists for Preston Co 1818-1820
are on the microfilm with the land tax records at West Virginia
University library.

The tax records are listed alphabetically by the first letter of the
surname and this makes searching the lists easier. You may be able to
request the microfilm thru a Mormon branch library. If not, there are
researchers at the Library of Virginia, the West Virginia Archives and
the West Virginia University library who will do research for a fee. Good
luck.
