OCEANA -- French E. "Chubby" Williams, 77, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in
a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born Oct. 10, 1919, in Cirtsville, he was the son of the late Elbert
Williams and Lottie Smith Williams Maynor.

Mr. Williams was a member of the Van Freewill Baptist Church and was
retired from the J. P. Hamer Log and Lumber Co. in Kenova with 37 years of
service.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alfred and James Maynor and
Clinton and Carl Phipps; three sisters, Bessie Williams, Beulah Taylor and
Beatrice Houchins.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Carrie Cook Williams; a daughter,
Alice Marie Marcum and her husband, Lonnie, of Kopperston; two
granddaughters, Trena Brotherton and her husband, Mike, of China Grove, N.C. and Cindie
Rose and her husband, Corbett, of Charlotte, N.C.; two great-grandchildren,
Derek Rose and Hanna Michele Brotherton, a brother, Quincy Phipps of
Indiana; three sisters, Estill Garrett of Fayetteville, Audrey Wahls of Fairdale
and Edna Tessa of Bluefield.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Evans Memorial Chapel with the Rev.
Glen Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens,
Matheny.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Evans and Evans Funeral
Directors.

Carl W. Phipps

Funeral services for Carl William Phipps, 48, Newark, Del., formerly of
Page, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Tyree Funeral Home
Chapel
in Oak Hill with the Rev. Kenneth Bond in charge. Burial will be in High
Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Phipps died Sunday near Elkton, Md., from injuries suffered in an
automobile
accident.

Born Aug. 22, 1917, at Glen White, he was a son of Walter Phipps of
Milburn
and Mrs. Lottie Maynor of Beckley.

He was a veteran of World War II and was employed by Chrysler Corp. in
Newark, Del.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Goldie Phipps; four sons, Carl Jr.,
Charles
Lee, Carnel Ray and David W., all of Newark, Del.; three daughters, Daisy
M., Laura J. and Lottie S., all of Newark, Del.; two brothers, Quincy of
Kendallville, Ind., and Clinton Phipps of Indianapolis, Ind.; four
sisters,
Mrs. Audrey Wahl of Fairdale, Mrs. Estell Garrett of Fayetteville, Mrs.
Beulah Taylor of Milburn and Mrs. Beatrice Houchins of Beckley, and three
half brothers and two half sisters.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. today. (RNS)

J.W., I can't find a copy of the obituary, but I have made some notes,
which indicates I have seen it. Here are my notices. Maybe they will
