Dear Listers:
My husband is a direct descendant of JONATHAN AND NANCY SARAH (PUGH) NIXON through their son, JOHN NIXON. I belong to the Genealogical Society of Western Pennsylvania and would like to apply for the society’s designation of “Pioneer Families of Southwestern Pennsylvania” for Jonathan and Sarah Nixon. I need genealogical proof of their presence in southwestern PA prior to 1830.
Jonathan and Sarah left Hampshire County, Virginia about 1776-1777 and migrated to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. About 1784, they left Pennsylvania and migrated to Booths Creek (Boothsville), WV. I have found documentation of them in Harrison, Taylor, and Marion counties in West Virginia. Several of the NIXON children then migrated to Perry and Hocking counties in Ohio in the late 1700's and early 1800's to the area around New Straitsville, OH.
I am trying to document Jonathan and Sarah as residing in German or Springhill Twp, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania between 1777 and 1784 (now Fayette County, Pennsylvania). I have information that several of their children were born in Westmoreland County during that time: JESSE A., ROBERT M., ELIZABETH, SAMUEL, SARAH, and HANNAH. I have Jonathan Nixon on the 1785 Westmoreland County tax rolls and information on his signing the “Petition for a New State” (Westlyvania).
I also found this bit of information on one of the Rootsweb Mailing Lists and would like to know if anyone researching this Nixon family has the source information for this quote:
THE PA ARCHIVES SAY THAT IN WESTMORELAND CO, SPRINGHILL TOWNSHIP
IN THE YEAR OF 1783 THERE RESIDED JONATHAN NIXON, JACOB PUGH (SPELLED POUGH),
FRANCIS PATTON (WHO HAD MARRIED RUTH PARKES, THE DAUGHTER OF ANDREW PARKES)
JESSE YORK AND FOUR FAMILIES OF THOMAS. IN THAT YEAR FAYETTE CO WAS FORMED
FROM WESTMORELAND.
I would appreciate any help documenting the NIXON family in
Westmoreland County, PA.
Sincerely,
Pam Nixon
Westland, Pennsylvania
