Hi, Patty and Jackie,

I noticed your surname is Payne. I have been trying to find descendents of
Lewis B.Payne in your area. He was born in NC and moved to VA, then to KY
and then to Wayne Co., WV. His daughter, Mary Payne, married Merideth
Spence. I believe some Caldwell's also married some of the Payne's. Last
summer I went to the Wayne Co. Court House seeking info. Did find the
application of marriage for Merideth and Mary. No parents were listed. I
found some of their family in Lincoln Co. Lewis B. Payne 'adopted' my great
grandmother, America Grayson. She was born at the time of the Trail of
Tears. Some how she ended up with the Paynes and appears on the 1850 US
Census for VA. She married Thompson Cole from VA. He died of an illness he
contracted while serving in the Union for KY. She is referred at times as
America Payne, but I have some records where she swore under oath that she
had never been a Payne but her last name was Grayson. She was full-blooded
Cherokee Indian. If you have any information or are part of the line, I
would love to hear from you. I am on the Wayne Co. list.
