PRESIDENT DAVIS AUTHORIZES FOOD AQUISITIONS JANUARY 4, 1864
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Throughout the history of the War Between the States, forag-
ing for the southern armies has been a continual struggle of
its own.
President Davis has dismissed several efforts to permit army
commandeering for food supplies.
On January 4th, 1864, he authorizes General Lee to demand on
request any and all food supplies needed, for his beliguered
Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates troops and ani-
mals in winter quarters are seriously underfed,
The civilian population of the South, including Virginia has
been suffering considerable deprivations. Such an order made
under desperation for the 'Confederate Cause' in no way adds
to Davis' popularity.
