Try going to this site on Hardy County History. the last place mentioned is
Willow Wall, which they say the Battle of Moorefield took place on 07 Aug
1864 in the vicinity of Willow Wall, which is listed in the National Register
of Historic Places. My 3rd great uncle, Andrew Miller, of Aleppo Twp. PA,
enlisted in WV Co. D, 1st Regt. Infantry. He was captured, taken to
Richmond, then Danville and on to the dreaded
Andersonville. He was "paroled" 27 Mar 1865 to Vicksburg, MS and died 13 Apr
1865 at McPherson US General Hospital, Vicksburg of survey. He is buried in
the National Cemetery there. In April, on the 135th anniversary of his
death, I was able to go to Vicksburg and see his grave which is in sight of
the Mississippi River. There are 17,000 Union soldiers buried there, and of
the 17,000 soldiers, 13,000 are unknown. I was the first in the family to go
to his grave and it was a very meaningful experience for me. Andrew was only
25 years old. There were copies of three letters he wrote before he was
captured in his National Archives file. In each letter, he states he is
sending money home, $10, $5. and $15. This was proof to the government his
aged father needed his help on the farm as Andrew had three invalid sisters.
His mother died while he was in prison. His father, George Miller got a
pension on Andrew's service and death.
