Hi

I think you will find that R1a is coincidental with Gothic migration.

The gothic homeland centres on Prussia, not Sweden. Swedish claims to the feats of the Goths are attributable to the absorbtion of the Geat Kingdom and a nationalistic interpretation of their history.

The Goths were created in the 1stC BC when a minority geat/Gotlandic invasion of the Baltiji tribes of the lower vistula occured and a hybride 'Gothic' culture arose, in much the same way as an Anglo-Saxon minority over took the Celtic majority in the UK.

Appart from their Prussian homeland, R1a concentrations can be found in gothic migration period centres of nothern Sapin, Lombard areas of Italy and NW Black Sea area. Haplo Group I does not have the same distribution.

R1a's can also be found in Norse settlement areas but not Dane settlement areas, Post 907 there was a split in the viking world Harold Fairhair king of the Danes spilt with his old friend Ragvald the Earl of More. Ragvald recruited Prussian Vikings as muscle as did Halfdan 'Whiteshirt' ragnasson before him). So you get very noticebale R1a concentrations in Trondheim (old Norwegian viking capital), the Scottish islands, Faeroes and Scotish Isles, as well as present in families of Norman descent. You get some R1a's in south Sweden (old Geat/Goth areas), but they are not so numerous in Sweden and Denmark.

I have a map of R1a distribution in Europe but can't find out how to upload it on this site.

Best regards

Peter
