Hi:

I'd love to know who George's parents were, too! I don't have a great deal on
this family, but will share what I have. If you can add to it, I'd love to
have the information.

1987 Letter from Ladye Heathcott
Mayfield, KY 42066

James Milton Yarbrough m. Amelia Ann Jettan (b 20 Nov 1828, d. 16 Aug
1891). They had a daughter, Virginia Belinda Yarbrough (b. 24 Sept 1858, d.
Jul 1942) who married James Leondus Sims (b. 18 Feb 1857, d. Jun 1928).
They had son Harvey Milton Sims, b. Nov 1, 1884, d. Oct 2, 1930. He had dau
Ladye Larelle Sims (b. Nov 14, 1913) who married Joseph E. Heathcott.

There is some evidence that they [Stokes and Yarbroughs] lived near
each other ... some cousins [Stokes] removed from Chatham Co., NC to TN. E.
Jordon Stokes (b. 1817 Chatham Co., NC near B. Everitt Jordon Lake, went to
Wilson Co., TN, m. Martha J. ___, b. Wilson Co., TN 9 Mar 1826, d. 19 Jun
1883. E. Jordon Stokes d. Nov 27, 1886. Both are buried Cedar Grove
Cemetery, Lebanon, TN.

George Y. was a methodist Circuit rider and Wife Lucretia started a
Sunday School in her log cabin, from which a methodist espiscopal church,
south was organized. (My great great grandfather, Rev. John Sheridan, on my
mother's side was founder of what is now United Methodist Church, Burnetts
Chapel Church. Also, the Stokes family followed to Stewart Co. TN from NC
and in 1835 followed Lucretia's family to Graves Co., KY.Miscellaneous
Stewart Co., TN records:

1807Thomas Stokes v. Richard Yarbrough. Assault & Battery. Dismissed by
order of the plaintiff and the defendant ordered to pay costs except the
plaintiff's attorney's fees and Elias Watson for the Plaintiff. Stewart Co.,
TN Minute book 1804 - 1807. p. 50:

18132 Nov. George Yarborough (and others) was ordered to work on road

18158 Feb. Zaccariah Wyatt appointed overseer of road from fork of road
about one and one-half miles from Chambers' Mill to Humphrey County line
leading to Reynoldsburgh, and among those ordered to work on the road, George
Yarborough.

18191 Feb. Court Minutes Ordered that Abner Stokes be overseer of the
road from Bowling Green a direct course to Hopkinsville, and among those to
work on the Road were James Yarborough, George Yarborough.

[Karen's note: George Yarborough m. Lucretia Stokes. Could Abner
have been her father, or perhaps brother? Men assigned to work on roads
together were usually neighbors and the part of the roads they were assigned
to work on was usually a section of the road that either passed or was near
their property.]

18202 May. A deed of conveyance from William Randle to William Williams
for 400 acres of land was proved by the oath of George Yarborough, a
subscribing witness, and ordered to be recorded (William Williams' estate
settlement).

18207 Aug. A deed of bargain and sale from George Yarborough to William
Throgmorton for 10 acres of land was proved in open court by oaths of James
Turner and Asa Turner, and ordered recorded.

182210 May. Sheriff was ordered to summon George Yarborough to attend
circuit court as a juror.

18234 Aug. James Hamlett appointed overseer of road from Elliott's Ferry
to intersect the Dover Road above Anthony Lee's, and among those to work on
road was George Yarborough.

182420 Aug. George Yarborough ordered to work on road.

Kentucky Genealogy and Biography, Volume VI, McDowell, 1885. p. 133:

W. A. Yarbrough was born December 30, 1826, in Stewart County, Tenn. He is a
son of George and Lucretia (Stokes) Yarbrough. The father was born in North
Carolina. He came to Graves County in 1832, engaged in merchandising, a few
years later in farming. This he continued till his death, which occurred in
July, 1848, at the age of fifty-five. The mother was born in North Carolina;
she died February 13, 1884, aged eighty-seven years. W. A. Yarbrough was
brough up on his father's farm, and has always followed the business of
farming. In August, 1878, he was elected sheriff and re-elected in 1880. He
was married May 3, 1848, to Elizabeth Leech of Graves County. She died
January 28, 1881, leaving three sons and two daughters. His second marriage
was in April 3, 1884, to Miss M. E. Purdy of this county. Mr. Yarbrough is a
member of the Masonic fraternity.
