How wonderful to hear from you. Our line departs almost right away, but we
are in fact very distance cousins, both originating from the mysterious
Joseph Yates who was perhaps from Leeds, England.
Researchers have tried for many, many years to trace him back to England and
find out who whose parents were. There is a very interesting paper in the
Schenectady Historical Society library about who he IS NOT. A woman spent a
great deal of money to have researchers in England establish that our Joseph
was the second or third son of nobility -- with the law of primogeniture, he
would not have been eligible to inherit property or land -- and so he came to
New Netherlands (just about to become New York) to seek his fortune in the
new world. Well, the English scholars/researchers performed a heroic job
proving that he couldn't possibly have been from a noble family. No Joseph
Yates fits that description. They tried to figure out just who he really was,
to no avail. If you write the Historical Society, they will probably copy
that research paper for you. It's very interesting. Tell them it's in the
Yates file.
They are also online at www.schist.org
Snail mail address is 32 Washington Avenue, Schenectady, NY 12305
Please let me know if you want to share any family information. My Yates
married into all the old Dutch families. My mother was the first one in her
line to leave Schenectady -- all my people just settled there and sat tight,
which makes research pretty easy.
