Hi again

One of my cousins a few times removed was an inmate of York Castle Prison at the time of the 1881 census. Does anyone know whether it might be possible to find out the reason for his conviction, assuming it was not something sufficiently dramatic to be reported in the newspapers? Are the prison records for this period available anywhere?
