In reply to the American colonies use of John Doe and Jane Doe, I worked on
the 1990 and 2000 census in Connecticut. When we were unable to determine
name (because of lack of cooperation or other reason) but could get
information by observation or neighbors, We put down what information we
could get and referred to occupants as John Doe, Jane Doe, Child John Doe,
etc. It is also used in many other cases-legal notice in paper-NOTICE TO
JOHN DOE FATHER OF CHILD BORN ON A CERTAIN DATE, ALSO USED IN COURT CASES
WHERE IDENTITY OF PERSON UNKNOWN. In OTHER WORDS, IT IS USED FOR A PERSON
FOR WHOM NAME IS NOT KNOWN.
