Although Nancy is quite correct in saying that the first Bishop of
Sheffield was Dr Leonard Hedley Burrows, there was, prior to 1914, a
Suffragan Bishop of Sheffield, Dr. John Nathaniel Qirk. He was Suffragan
Bishop of Sheffield from 1901, until the Diocese of Sheffield was formed
in 1914. He held several postions concurrently, being the Vicar of
Doncaster 1901-1905, the Vicar of St Mark's, Sheffield, 1905-1911, and
Canon Residentiary of York Minster 1912-1914.
His role as Suffragan Bishop, was to assist the Archbishop of York, Dr.
Maclagan, in the administration of the Diocese. At that time, Sheffield
was part of the diocese of York.
So, it is possible that Bishop Quirk also maintained, or more likely
stayed in, a house in Sheffield, when his duties brought him to
I have found a reference to a sum of 6,000 UKP being raised to provide a
suitable house for the new Bishop in 1914, which pre-supposes that there
was no official Bishop's residence prior to that date.
So, it depends how accurate the date of 1914-1915 is, in relation to
your mother's employment by 'the bishop'.
I can't find any reference to the actual name or address of Dr Burrows'
You might try a speculative letter to 'The Bishop of Sheffield,
Sheffield Cathedral, Church St., Sheffield, Yorkshire. and see what
comes back. You never know, there may still be records, still in
existence, of Dr Burrows affairs.
Another possibility is Sheffield Archives, I guess.
