Hi,
In our Church (Anglican, evangelical) baptism is full immersion and only
offered to Christians who profess their faith in the Godhead. It is a symbol
of dying to sin and being born again in Christ. It is an adult profession of
this and we believe not to be entered into lightly. Christening is the
infant baptism in the Church and is welcoming a child or baby into the
Church family. A child is brought up in the Church and the Church promises
to pray for them and help with their upbringing until they too are able to
make an informed choice about their beliefs in God. On profession of their
faith they can then receive full immersion baptism. Infant baptism is not
Bible based although full families were often baptised together in the very
beginnings of the Church in Galilee. Full immersion baptism is Bible based.
I think Churches as they have split into denominations have simply taken
these words and used them for the same act. Hope this is helpful to all.
Happy 2001 to all.
Val.
