checked and re-checked with my husband's family, it would now seem that the
headstone was wrong or mis-read and that she was somewhat younger and
therefore did not appear on the 1881.

She was 20 in 1901, so it seems that she was born just after the 1881
census. There is a "Susan May Diston" born in 1881 on the GRO index, rather
than the "Susan Marian Diston" I am seeking. Close enough, perhaps, but the
birth was registered in Burnley, whereas in 1901, the family lived in
Bradford.

seek further confirmation of her identity. Her father was listed as Robert
DISTON, army pensioner, which might give credance to the idea that the
family moved around.

elsewhere if the army moved them a lot!]

younger than Susan and therefore also not on the 1881]. If that combination
comes up positive, I can then order the birth certificate reasonably secure
in the knowledge that this is the right family.
