GO to the following website.....

This is the major site for all Yorkshire research (part of GENUKI, the umbrella
site for all UK and Ireland genealogical research), run by a well known member
of this list, Colin Hinson.
You will find it a vast treasure house for material on Yorkshire and if you
scroll down the opening page there are links with detailed instructions to
download maps of Yorkshire, also a "Where is it in Yorkshire?" guide that
identifies just about every place in the county.
Do remember that on this list, and when researching in Yorkshire generally, we
base all research on the pre-1974 counties, i.e. before the local government
reorganisation of that year took place. As far as we are concerned here,
Yorkshire is still divided into the three Ridings, North, East and West, and is
in effect three counties in one - that is why it is so large and sometimes
difficult to research in.
Yorkshire has around a dozen or more major record and archives offices, whereas
most counties have just the one, and no fewer than 17 (yes, seventeen!) family
history societies.
