Subject: [YKS] Wrong father on marriage cert
Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2002 11:12:17 +0000

It is much more likely the IGI named the wrong father rather than the
Registrar. However I do have a very similar problem.
On my husbands Grandfathers first marriage cert in 1890 no father is listed
(He married in Church) On the second one in 1896 his father is named as
SAMUEL HEPPLESTALL Farmer Deceased. We have searched the BMD for all
Samuels and can not find one. Either
There seems to be only a few explanations. Either GEORGE HEPPLESTALL had so
much hassle the first time he married not naming a father that he invented
one. He may have been illegitimate and only found out his fathers name
after the first marriage. When giving the name Samuel to the Registrar he
would have been unlikely to volunteer that Samuel's surname was not the
same as his own. Or his mother married a man named Samuel and he then died
young so George didn't remember him.
There are many mistakes on the IGI.My GGGrandmother is down as Jane Shimmin
but I knew from my mother and a Will that it was Susan. When I checked the
Parish record the writing was very faint and could have been mistaken for
Jane by the transcriber.
Another time I spent 15yrs searching for a James Gregory who was named as
father on my GGrandfathers birth cert. This name was the same in the Parish
record at Bakewell. However as it was 1855 I finally decided to purchase
the cert from the Reg Office. The fathers name was not James but Samuel.
The Vicar had obviously made a mistake and put James twice. I went on to
find the marriage of Samuel & Sarah.
To trace Hannah Lunn the searcher should try to find the family on the
1861/71 census. Also check the St Caths registers for a marriage to David
or Wm up to ten years before the birth and after the birth to William.
Finally she should search the birth registers for any other children who
may have been born to the couple in the same area.
