Carole,

Cecil was originally a female name, perhaps that is all there is to the
puzzle.

Most early Cecils were female: it was only in Victorian times that it
cemae a popular boy's name, drawn not from the old girl's name, or the
Latin patrician name, but as one of the surnames of current aristocratic
families (in this case, the Earls of Salisbury and Marquesses of Exeter.
{Percy, Stanley, Howard, Neville, etc come from similar sources)
And very few people probably knew it meant blind in Latin)...............

Or, maybe, the underscore denotes a letter which the transcriber knew was
there but couldn't read the writing.

Hi Fellow Listers,

My puzzle is the name Cecile,

Could anyone tell me if there is a shortened version or a nick name for
CECILE.

On my G Grandmother's certificates of Birth for her children, it is
written as so:-

Cecil_ Eliz'th Starling nee Woods.

Does the underscoring mean anything in particular.????

I can't find a marriage or a death under this name.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Best Wishes,

Carole Harris in OZ
