Hi Graham:The Leeds Mercury was one of the oldest local newspapers in the UK,founded before 1750.The Leeds Intelligencer(c.1777)became the YorkshirePost.
A friend of mine is getting his PHD thesis published, which is on Edward Baines, the illustrous editor of the Mercury.
A useful booklet was published in 1987 by the Federationof Family History Societies entilted
Local Newspapers 1750-1920 and gives details about local newspapers throughout
England and Wales. It probably is still inprint.
Cheers
Douglas(Leeds)

Hi guys & guyesses
And for something completely dumb from someone in the antipodes.
In general when did newspapers per se start in UK and was there
newsletters or flyers or the like before newsletters.
In particular, how early in the 19th century can newspapers or
newsletters or announcements or proclamations be found.
In particular for Leeds and surrounding towns.
thanks
Graham Dixon

ago and had 'newspapers' very shortly after.)

'Darlington and Stockton Times' have archive copies available for public
inspection. How far back do they date? Are they readable on-line or at
central libraries?
