IF any FHS programme secretaries happen to be reading this, one of
the lectures I give is called "All Human Life Is Here - Sex, Sin &
Scandal in Newspapers."
This is a rather different talk to the usual one about researching
from old newspapers (which I can also do). Basically, it's about the
fact that our ancestors were just as interested in the prurient and
scandalous tales of their day as are today's tabloid newspaper
readers. It makes the point that there is nothing new under, or
indeed in, the Sun!
It's a mostly light-hearted romp through a couple of centuries or so
of sexy, scandalous and funny stories that I've collected from
newspapers in the course of my researches. I gave this talk in
Victoria BC on my recent visit there and it was better received than
my more serious ones on writing up your family history and 1,000
years of English genealogical records!
Anyone interested in hearing it, please reply offlist.
