Having done a lot of transcribing of the '81 and '91 censuses, I would not
necessarily blame the transcriber for this one.
If the filming was less than perfect, or the enumerator forgot to dip his pen in
the ink often enough, or if he simply had a completely different style of
writing from the transcriber, the transcriber can be stymied. My practice is to
aim for the simplest breakdown of the letters in front of me. But I know it
doesn't always work.
