can't resist joining in this debate
pottage/potage/porridge used to be interchangeable - depended on where you
were from - meaning something(s) boiled in water on the stove
the bowl you served it it was a porringer
other words the Americans use that come back to old(er) english
fall - dialect word for autumn (leaf fall) 17th/18th century Lancashire
particularly
pavement for road - dates back to Roman times, archaeologists still refer to
roman roads as pavements
the 'ize' ending on many words - this was and still is the 'correct' english
'ise' has come into use through custom and practice
can you not tell that I once worked for an academic who had majored in
english language?
Wendy
