Hi, I think this is just the impression the media gave. He actually went
to the Hotel and had one drink with his mates carefully watched by his
mother and other family members. It gave a real lift to those who had
worked to get him out. This has been a tense time for the whole town. The
Gold mine is likely to remain closed and so many men will have to look for
alternate work.The other man was unable to either attend the funeral or go
to the Hotel. The news made it sound like everyone was buying him a drink
with the implication he was there for a long time until you heard the whole
story.

We can relate any mining situations back to our ancestors almost anywhere
particularly the coal miners in Yorkshire. There were many mine disasters
in those days we just don't expect them today.
