Like lots of others, I have been looking at the 1911 Census over the last
few days. One thing that puzzled me were the numbers that seemed to have
been added, usually in colour, probably by the enumerators.
With a little searching I found indexes to these codes within the site.
If you are interested as to the "Official" description of the person's job
there is a list of "Occupation Codes" at
http://www.1911census.co.uk/content/default.aspx?r=24&127
The official "Birthplace Codes", i.e. the district where they considered the
person was born, are at
http://www.1911census.co.uk/content/default.aspx?r=24&128
Both of these may help in interpreting possibly confusing job and place
descriptions.
