Hi to everyone,

By now, you will all know that I had to cancel my participation in
Yorksgen 2009 because of some rather extensive surgery I underwent six
weeks ago. The primary reason for my having to cancel was my surgeon's
refusal to allow me to fly over so soon afterwards. I have been thinking
of you all and how much I would miss being with you all. Yesterday,
however, as I drove down from Rotherham to Stanstead, I saw the wisdom
in my cancellation.

WHAT on earth were you doing in Yorkshire? You must be thinking! Sadly,
I had to twist my surgeon's arm because of the death of a member of our
very, very close COLLIER-ALLOTT-GUIMARAENS family, Tom Collier, whose
funeral and burial were held at Wentworth Parish Church on Friday
afternoon. There was no way that I could not attend, so I flew over with
my children and their spouses on Thursday evening and flew back to Porto
yesterday evening. As these occasions go, it was a bittersweet family
occasion, where the celebration of a wonderful person's life collides
with the knowledge of how much he will be missed.

Still, the surgeon was partly right. I did not seem to suffer physically
from the trip, but I did get extremely tired and it is quite clear that,
no matter how much I wanted to pop over to York and say hello, I am not
yet well enough to participate fully in the two weeks of research and
activities I had planned. I will join you next year. In the meantime, I
will think of you all - have a wonderful time and may your research
successes exceed your expectations!
