Subject: [BOZEMAN-L] Map of Albemarle County, NC circa 1733

I have been studying an interesting map which was made in about 1733. I
found the map in the following book:
Chowan Precinct
North Carolina
1696 to 1723
Genealogical Abstracts of Deed Books
by Margaret M. Hofmann
The map is of Albemarle County, North Carolina and part of Bath County,
North Carolina and shows the precincts of Beaufort, Hyde, Edgcomb, Bertie,
Chowan, Pequimans, Pasquotank, and Currituck. The map shows most of the
rivers, streams and creeks by name. It also show the major roads. Finally,
it lists the names of the major landowners with the names written in at the
appropriate locations on the map.
There are several points of interest which can be found on this map.
1) Between 1715 and 1718, Samuel Bozeman is known to have owned land on
Indian Town Creek. Adjacent landowners included Parker and White. This map
shows "Indian T. C." The creek is a tributary on the east side of the
Chowan River. The map shows that Parker owned land on the north side of the
creek and that White's Ferry was just south of the creek. Whites Ferry
appears to be near present day Colerain, NC. Indian Town Creek is just a
little farther north along the river on the east side. Also written on the
map near the name of Parker is a name which could be Bozeman (or some
variation of Bozeman).
2) Ralph Bozeman owned land on the Cypress Swamp in Perquimans County, NC on
the southwest side of the Perquimans River. This map shows the Cypress
Swamp. It does not list Bozeman or Wilson as landowners but it does list
Phelps, Pettiver, and Sander. These are landowners who had land adjacent to
Ralph and the Wilson family. The map does not list Robert Wilson Creek.
3) Henry Bozeman bought land in 1730 from Barnaby MacKinne on the south side
of the Great Quankey Creek. This map shows this creek as a tributary of the
Roanoke River. It also shows landowners B. MacKinne and J. Milliken. James
Milliken witnessed the sale of the land from Barnaby MacKinne to Henry
Bozeman.
Even though Samuel lived on Indian Town Creek in Chowan Precinct and Ralph
lived near the Cypress Swamp in Pequimans Precinct, examination of the map
shows that they probably lived only a few miles apart. The head of Indian
Town Creek and Cypress Swamp and the head of what I believe to be Robert
Wilson Creek are very close together.
I would offer to make copies of the map, but I am afraid that copies of a
copy might be very difficult to read. I think that most genealogy libraries
have the book that I found the map in.
