OK. Here goes. There were three brothers in Isle of Wight County, VA in
the 1600's; Ralph, Henry, and Ambrose. (I am assuming that Ralph is a
brother to Henry and Ambrose who are known to have been brothers.)
Ambrose is not known to have been married or to have had children. Ambrose
died between 1714-1717 most likely in Isle of Wight County.
Henry was known to have been married. His wife's name was Mary. However,
there is no clear indication that they had any children. In 1717, after the
death of Ambrose, Henry sold the last of the 300 acres which Ambrose had
originally purchased in Isle of Wight County in 1673. In 1716, Henry and
his wife bought 175 acres on the north side of the Nottoway River. This
would be in what is now Southampton County, VA. So it would appear that
Ambrose and Henry lived on the same piece of land until Ambrose's death
after which time Henry sold the farm and moved. So, the question is why did
Henry move to Southampton County? Most likely, it was to be near family.
It is possible that Henry had children who had already moved to Southampton
County and he and his wife wanted to be near them after the death of his
brother Ambrose. There is some indication that Henry Pope and his family
had also moved to this area so it could be that Henry Bozeman simply wanted
to be near his sister's family. You may recall that his sister, Marie,
married William Pope, the father of Henry Pope. In any event, I have no
record of Henry ever selling this land. He is known to have lived there
until at least 1725. Then, in 1730, a Henry Bozeman bought 296 acres in
Halifax County in North Carolina from Barnabee MacKinne. In 1732, he sold
30 acres of this land to John McKinne. In 1736 he sold the remaining 266
acres to Benjamin Rawlings. This is the last I know of this Henry. I
suspect that this is the same Henry who moved to Southampton County,
although I have no proof of this. He would have been at least 86 years old
in 1736. If not the same Henry, then it most likely could have been a son
named Henry.
Ralph Bozeman and his wife, Mary, are known to have had at least three
children, Mary, Samuel, and Ralph, Jr. Ralph, Sr. died by 1693, probably in
Isle of Wight County. Mary, daughter of Ralph, Sr. married Thomas Bullock
(ancestor of Ron Bullock on our list). Ralph Jr., is known to have moved to
Perquimans County, NC where he died in 1749. He is known to have had a wife
named Mary but apparently had no children. Samuel is known to have moved to
Chowan County, NC. Even though he moved to a different county than his
brother, Ralph, they apparently lived very close together, just across the
county line from each other. This Samuel is a bit of a mystery. He may
have died by 1721. A "Widow" Boasman is listed as a taxpayer in Chowan
County in 1721. However, Samuel is named in a court case between 1721 and
1723. Towards the end of the case, reference is made to an attachment
against the estate of Samuel Bozeman. Samuel never appeared and the case
was eventually dropped by the plaintiff. I suppose that the use of the word
"estate" could simply be referring to his property and he was actually still
alive, not dead. If he was still alive, I wonder who the widow was who
appeared in the census in 1721. In 1733, a Samuel Bozeman was granted a
patent for 230 acres on the south side of the Nottoway River. This would be
in present day Southampton County, VA across the river from the land the
Henry Bozeman bought and still lived on until at least 1725. Is this Samuel
the same Samuel who was in Chowan County, NC? Or, is this Samuel, perhaps
the son of Henry. There were no references to Samuel in Chowan County after
the court case in 1723 was dropped. If he wasn't dead, he most likely moved
back to Virginia and settled very near to his uncle Henry. In 1735, Samuel
sold the 230 acres to John Ellyson. Of extreme interest is the fact that
one of the witnesses was Samuel Bozeman, Jr. A Samuel Bozeman was known to
have still been living on the south side of the Nottoway river in 1747. Can
this Samuel be the Samuel we know as Samuel of Bladen County, NC?
James Bozeman first appeared in North Carolina in 1744 when he was granted
land in Edgecombe County. We know that this James had a brother, Samuel. I
have to think that James must have come to NC from Southampton County, VA.
One possible scenario is that Samuel, Sr. died by 1744 and left his property
in Southampton County to his son, Samuel, Jr. James, would have been left
with no property and could have gone to Edgecombe County where he was
granted 200 acres.
In 1760, the will of John Williford in Southampton County, VA refers to his
daughter, Mary Bozeman. Was she married to a brother of Samuel and James?
In 1770, Benjamin Bozeman and his son, Howell, appear on a list of
Southampton County Tithables. Is Benjamin another brother of Samuel and
James? Also, in 1770, William Bozeman and his son, Jordan, appear on a list
of Southampton County Tithables. Could William be yet another brother?
Could Mary Williford have been married to Benjamin or William? Micajah,
Lucy, and Sally Bozeman also were likely born in Southampton County, VA by
about 1765-1770.
Between 1783 and 1790, a William Bozeman and a Elizabeth Bozeman are
involved in several land transactions in Halifax County, NC. Is this the
same William who was in Southampton County, VA in 1770? I believe that he
had died by 1790 as only Elizabeth is named in the census for Halifax
County. Another possibility is that he is descended from the Henry Bozeman
who was last known to have been in Halifax County in 1736.
We know that Mordicai Bozeman was born in about 1735. We also know that a
Thomas Bozeman was born by about 1740. This means that Samuel, Sr. of
Southampton County, VA (son of Ralph of Isle of Wight), could have had sons
as follows:
James
Samuel
Mordicai
Benjamin
William
Thomas
As you can see, there was a large family of Bozeman's in Southampton County,
VA in the 1700's. The 1790 and 1800 census for Southampton County have been
lost. But, by 1810, I believe that only Micajah was listed in Southampton
County, VA. They had all apparently moved on. We know James went to
Edgecombe; Samuel went to Bladen County and then to Georgia ; Mordicai went
to South Carolina; Benjamin may have gone to Richmond County, NC and then to
Ohio; William went to ???; and Thomas may have gone to NC and then to GA. I
believe that a search of the land records for Southampton County, VA could
prove to be very informative. I believe that we might be able to tie up a
lot of loose ends if we could find out more about the Bozeman's of
Southampton County, VA.
