Hi Everybody,

I have been away from this list for a while working on other things. Carol
just welcomed me back after seeing this post on the Cherokee co. list. I
must say I was happy to oblige.

For those of you searching your Native American Heritage, you might want to
try the following link to some National Archive Files on line which have
many Applications as well as many other interesting things. Just put in the
name you are searching and hit ~ Search ~ then ~ Display find~ then scroll
and hit ~Full Display button when you find something interesting. I know
this is oversimplifying for most of you but we all were beginners at one
time. Here is one I found and ordered copies of.

SARAH WIGINGTON
Case # 2707 Dawes Commission 1896 Index

I am researching the WIGINGTON and BOZEMAN families from Pickens co.
and Cherokee co.Georgia.

My gt. gt grandfather Ancel Roe WIGINGTON who m. Rachel RUSSELL lived there
in the 1800's for many years. So did my gt grandfather Major Maxwell
WIGINGTON who m. Malissa BOZEMAN. My grandfather George WIGINGTON
moved from Pickens co. to Cobb co, Marietta ,Ga. He purchased 40 acres
of land there in 1934. I have a copy of that transaction.

My gt. grandfather is the Major Maxwell WIGINGTON listed here. He is shown
in Lost Marriage Records of Pickens County as ~ Mageor M. WIGINGTON to
Mary M. BOZEMAN, 2 November 1866, by A.P. Mullinax, JP

Major Maxwell "Mack" and Malissa are listed in the ~

1870 Pickens County, Georgia Census
#418
WIGINGTON Maxwell age 21 born Ga.
Malissa 20 "
Samatha 2 (Palestine) "
William 1 "

Malissa is listed in 1860 Cherokee co Ga. census. Her father William left
soon after she was born, to look for gold in Calif. He died in route and
was buried at sea. Her brother John M., the first born, went to Montana.
BOZEMAN Mt., trail and city are named for him. Malissa was called Sis so
this must be why the C. after her name in census.

1860 Pickens county, Georgia Census
# 726-768
Bozeman Delilah age 50
Nancy 18
George W 16
Malissa C 10

I ran across a record in Ancestry.com stating that SARAH M. WIGINGTON,
Case #2707 had applied for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation.
She lived in the Pickens co. Ga. area.
I sent to the National Archives,Ft. Worth, Tx. where these records are kept
and named in these records are several different families and their
children.
They are all applying for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation by giving proof
that they are all descendants of ~ PRYOR (PRIOR) TALLY (TALLEY).

The chart sent to me is "showing Names of Applicants and Their Cherokee
Lineage to the Common Ancestor Whose Blood is Incontestable." It shows he
was 1/2 Cherokee Indian and living with the Indians.

This is how the decent goes to Sarah PINYON who had married James WIGINGTON.
According to "Our Family's Book of Books" by Louise Dale Ray JONES, this is
James Newton b. 1854 , the son of Warren b.1831, the son of James
S.b.1805, who was my Ancel Roe WIGINGTON's brother.

All these applications have statements by Matilda PINYON (88 yrs.old) in1896
which means she was b. abt. 1808. She stated " I was personally acquainted
with PRIOR TALLEY. He was a half blood Cherokee was raised in the tribe &
was a member of it. He had a daughter named Nancy TALLEYwho married PINYON
and William PINYON was their son. William PINYON is dead and he left a
daughter
SARAH who married Jas WIGINGTON. Another named Dovie who married Andrew
YOTHER. All of these daughters now live in Pickens county and they and
their children are the applicants for citizenship. Ary ROE is the grand
daughter of Prior TALLEY.

At this time in 1896 Sarah M. WIGINGTON is 46 yr. old . Here is a list of
her 6 children ~ Amanda Jane (23) Alfred (20) Mattie Malinda (16)
Rosa Lee (12) John Howell (10) & William Carter WIGGINTON(7)

Dovie b.abt 1850 and Andrew YOTHER's children are ~ son Lee (2 yrs) dau.
Emmer Elizabeth (1) dau. This is also in 1896.

Their claim was denied saying that Prior TALLEY is not now, and has not been
a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, since the removal of said Nation, west to
the Indian Territory as at present located and defined; that his name does
not appear on any of the authenticated rolls of said Nation;that neither he
nor any of his ancestors now reside, or ever have resided in the Cherokee
Nation and Indian Territory, as citizens thereof.

(My comment ~ this does not however, mean that he was not 1/2 Cherokee) Plus
we get a lot of family listings from these applications!

The names of several BROWNS,PINYONS,HOWELL,BAKER,ROE
and TALLEYS are in this list which I will list later, if there is any
interest.

Sara
