Subject: [BROOKS-NE] Connecticut Founder - Thomas Brooks of Haddam
Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 22:20:40 -0500

I'm pleased to forward this biographical summary from Averill Smith
Pappalardo. While this is just a collateral line for her, she's stepped
forward to collate and share data and sources she's noted as the
byproduct of her own research.

Therefore, if you have questions about Thomas Brooks of Haddam,
please *don't* direct them to Averill, but to the list.

Thanks, Averill!

Other such contributions are always welcome -- please drop me a
line if you'd like to take a crack at profiling one of the other CT
founders.

Chris

P.S. Haddam has its own genealogical website, found at
http://www.haddam.com/tucker/
which I found highly useful and well done.

Thomas Brooks, first settler of Haddam, Connecticut - 1662.

Thomas was born in 1617 and died in Haddam in Oct 1668 - he was 51. He may
have come on the ship Susan & Ellen in 1635 at age 18 (reason for birth in
1617). Richard of Lynn, Massachusetts, (also Susan & Ellen age 24) may be
brother. Richard removed to Easthampton, L.I. where he was of the first
settlers in 1650. I have no info on their parentage.

Thomas had a home at New London in 1659, was gone in 1661 with wife Lucy,
who had died by 1662. Unknown if any children from this marriage. Thomas
then married Marah Spencer of Haddam, Connecticut, daughter of Gerrard
Spencer, born about 1643. They had the following children:

Sarah (Dec 1662-?)
Thomas (Jun 1664-5 Apr 1734)
Marah (Jun 1666-?)
Alice (Jun 1668-?)

Inventory of Thomas' estate had a value of £109-09-00, taken by Simon 2
Smith and George Gates. Birthdates of children were in Manwaring at the
notation of Thomas' inventory. I have no further info on Sarah, Marah,
Alice.

Thomas 2 Brooks was born and died in Haddam. He was second Deacon of the
Haddam Church. His will was 24 Feb 1729, proved 6 Aug 1734, inventory 28
Jun 1734.

On 16 Nov 1695/6 when Thomas was 31, he married Susanna Arnold, daughter of
Joseph Arnold and Elizabeth Wakeman, in Haddam, Connecticut.
