If you look at the number of Italian CARRICOs who came to the U.S. in the early
1900s (just 50):

you get the impression that there never were very many, but that of the ones
there were, half of them emigrated! There are certainly far more in the U.S.,
today, than there are in Italy. I wish we had maps similar to the Italian one
for Portugal and Brazil.
