Jean AudetteFerguson Watkins...Hiya!
I have figured out that my line came from Ireland (1851 census) and that their 1st son was 13 yrs old but was born in Ireland...therefore Jane & John and son Robert came to Canada between 1838 and 1851. This also tells me that they were married about 1837 (when they were both 20 yrs. old - 1851 census). The same census always tells us that she had three more children (James 6 yr., William 4 yr., Margaret 2 yr.) all born in Upper Canada (after they immigrated). Therefore the window narrows again ((1851 census - Oldest born in Canada 6Yrs = 1845). So arrival to Canada is now between 1838 -1845.
They were Presbyterian.
They first settled as farmers on Amherst Island near Kingston and that is the 1851 census I found them in.
And I know my line (through William) but the rest is just conjecture.
Can you suggest something for me...a direction...to search in?
Always searching...
Jean

I have a James Ferguson who arrived in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada about 1847 and lived there all his life. He was still living in 1885, according to the Portrait and Biographical Album of Henry Co., Illinois, published in 1885. He had a twin George who settled in Henry Co., Illinois. Their parents were James and Margot Huss Ferguson from Co. Fermanagh/Monaghan, Ireland. Other siblings of James were Martha, Margaret, Jane, Isabella, Samuel, and Thomas, but I do not know if they left Ireland, or if they did, where they settled.
