Dear List

Arrived back from my trip.

The file of S21 and R1b SNP results at

http://www.geocities.com/mcewanjc/s21.htm

has been updated. Specifically at this stage I have only updated the
table and the figure for checking.

To do this job I have taken various e-mails from the list, a number sent
to me, and also cross checked/added results from the DNA-ANTHROGENEALOGY
SNP database (Thanks Charles). To make it a bit simpler to pick out new
entries those with more than trivial changes have also had their
surnames colored.

I would appreciate it if the people who have been providing data, now
cross check their results with what I have listed and get back to me
with any problems before the weekend. The reason I need to do this is
that I think most have been getting SNP results over a time period and
some may not have provided all the data they have received. Some
clerical mutations may have also crept in.

Regards the results: we now have 10 S21 positives out of 42 individuals.
Most are located in the Frisian and associated clusters. However,
perhaps of most interest is that we now have an individual Blakely BNP5U
who has an extended haplotype most consistent with the R1bSTR42 cluster
(aka 10 mismatches) and specifically DYS390 =24.

On the basis of 9 marker STR Orkney haplotypes from S21 positive
individuals that Jim Wilson collected and genotyped this cluster had
previously been fingered as a likely hotspot for S21 positives.

However, the individual is really not a close match to any STR cluster.
The haplotype also is 10 mismatches from the current S21 modal.

A separate S21 positive associated with a composite haplotype F323W is
closest to R1bSTR3 cluster, but is also not far distant from
R1bSTR22Frisian (7 vs 9 mismatches at R1bSTR22Frisian, Genetic Distance
7 vs 10). At this stage given the nature of the composite haplotype
involved I will simply reserve judgement, until more results are
available.

My overall summary, is that we may have finally identified a separate
thread of S21 positive individuals, unrelated to the Frisian cluster.

Cheers

John McEwan
