Andrew,

It's very interesting but I wonder if those Livingstons whom you speak
of may be related to this Livingston line and it is the reason they
match so many other Scottish Livingstons? My children happen to be
descended from Robert Fulton of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (he of
the 1807 Clermont Steamboat and the 1803 "plunging boat", the Nautilus
submarine and torpedoes fame) and Harriet Livingston Schuyler.
Harriet was born in New York. The Fulton paternal line was from
Kilkenny, Ireland. However, on the maternal side, Robert Fulton's
maternal grandfather, Joseph Smith, was himself a descendant of Robert
Smith whose grandfather was originally a MacDonald (long story here),
who formed part of the Scottish emigration across the North Channel
into Ireland.

For what it's worth, Harriet Livingston's great great great
grandfather was Robert Livingston born in 1654 in Roxburghshire,
Scotland. His own parents were John Livingston, born in 1604
Stirlingshire, Scotland and Janet Fleming, born in 1613, Edinburgh,
Lothian, Scotland. They both died in the Netherlands. John
Livingston's parents, William Alexander Livingston and Agnes
Livingston were born in Monybroch and Dunipace, Scotland,
respectively. William's parents, Alexander and Barbara were from
Kilsyth and Strathclyde, Scotland respectively.

Unfortunately, my sons descend from Robert Fulton and Harriet's
Livingston line through their great grandmother, Elizabeth Fulton so
no yDNA there. My sons' surname is Shaw, also Scottish and I believe
from the MacIntosh clan. I sent for a Sorenson kit for my oldest son.
I may still have him test through FTDNA for the yDNA 37 before that.
I'm also thinking of having his grandfather Shaw tested for his mtDNA
so we will have his mother, Elizabeth "Bessie" Fulton's DNA. He is 85
and getting on in years. A year is a long time to wait for results.

Best Regards,
Ana

The whole question is rather important to the genealogy of Pennsylvania
Livingstons, many of whom seem to descend from a Swiss-German family of
Liebensteins. They still believe that somewhere in the past these were
Livingstons, though it is claimed that they have been traced back to
Zurich
in the 1500s. What has kept us thinking it likely is that Scottish
Livingstons are amongst their best matches, and historically the fact
that
they lived in a parish where "Marian exiles" may well have come from
Scotland in that century.

Best Regards
Andrew
