Obituary.
Jacob A. Sanders was born near Linville, Martin county Jan. 20, 1847,
departed this life near Avoca, Ind., Oct. 19th, 1902, having lived 55
yrs. 9 mos. less three days. He was married to Hannah Duncan, Oct. 11,
1869. To this union were born ten children, four having preceded the
father to the other world. Six are yet living to fight the battles of
this life until God speaks to them as he did to their father, come. Bro.
Sanders joined the Baptist church at Avoca about the year 1890. He after
that until his death lived as he promised his God to do, a Christian and
to one that was with him frequent in his last days on earth. He gave
wonderful evidences of his faith in his God oft times conversing within
in prayer for his family. He was a worker for his church and when this
new church in which he at this moment so quietly rests were being built
he gave his mite in dollars, his time, his influence. Soon after it was
finished his health began to fail. He was not able to oft times attend
worship that he so much enjoyed, and to the writer of this he at one time
spake, "I do wish I could be with them at Sabbath School once more." He
expressed himself as being glad if he couldn't live to enjoy the new
church house, that others could and that he always wanted to live to see
a new church house at Avoca. Then God for some reason called him home.
His suffering was long and great, but he bore it patiently never
fretting, never murmuring he leaves behind him a most noble, kind
companion. The above named children, one sister, Mrs. Lettringer and many
friends. Thus rests from his labors, his pains his troubles.
***
The above beautiful lines were written and read by Bro. Moore, at the
funeral, after which John Williams, of Bedford, made a short address.
The funeral services were held in the new Baptist church, and were very
solemn and impressive. It was sad indeed to part with one so useful, so
willing to work and give to the cause of the Christ he loved so much. He
will be missed greatly. Rest, brother, rest, God bless his sorrowing
friends.
