Hi Becky,

Interesting that your g-grandpa used both spellings. According to my cousin,
Diana (LAMBERT) Boyer: "I was told in my childhood that our last name was
changed from Lambeth to Lambert. This much I knew. It is not a
misspelling--they decided to change it. The story goes that there was a
family of Lambeth(s) who were getting themselves in trouble with the law or
whatever and our family chose to distance ourselves from them."

Then there was great uncle George who remained in England after the rest of
the family moved to New Zealand. George is with his family on the 1871
census for Ripon, Yorkshire:

George F. Lambert Son 11 Scholar
Born Ripon Yorkshire
(note: George's middle initial is really T not F for George Thomas Lambert)

Then I found George as LAMBETH on the 1881 Islington, London, Middlesex
census:
George LAMBETH M 23 M Ripon, York, England
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Ironmonger

I know this is him because he married his cousin Maria GOWING and Maria's
sister Annie is found with them:
Maria LAMBETH M 23 F Ripon, York, England
Rel: Wife
Annie GOWING U 28 F Ripon, York, England
Rel: Sister In Law

So, LAMBERT, LAMBETH, whatever! I think all variations are appropriate on
this list. Anyone else have evidence of the name changing back and forth?

Subject: [LAMBERT] Listowner reply to Lambert v. Lambeth

Hi! This is the listowner of this LAMBERT list. When I started it a
few years ago, it was the only one for Lambert (or Lambeth). My g-
grandpa used both spellings, though we've all settled into Lambert
now. So--this is the LAMBERT list, but any similar surname is
welcome, just in case!

Becky Lambert
