Friend has sent me this...
Death of Mr. John Pyke (notice a Y, but on Masterton Cemetery on line its a I)
At Te Whiti, this morning Mr John Pyke died at his residence at the age of 66. The late Mr Pyke was one of the earliest pioneer settlers, and one of those who in the early days and up to the present greatly helped to make New Zealand.. He was born in Bath. Somersetshire. in 1837. came to the Colony in 1857. He leaves
a wife and family of six sons and four daughters.
Makes it harder to search for when someone has mispelt it on transcriptions.. wonder what the actual headstone has I or Y... when I am able to get around again.. guess where I will be... Masterton Cemetery fishing for Pike!
Quite a few Pike's buried at Masterton according to their site.. none with Y though..
So he started with Y and went to I...
Clareville Cemetery have 9 Pike burials according to the list on line.. all spelt with I ....
It annoys me to have something miss spelt. I get it all the time with my surname... too many people write as they pronounce a word...
Adele Pentony-Graham..
