Subject: Re: genealogy
It appears that the James Sheppard of 1790 that you mention is probably a
grandson of my James Sheppard who was born in 1736/37. He died Sept 17, 1791 in
Newberry, SC.Wife Janette Riddle was born about 1742 and died Sept 9, 1819 in
Newberry.
---------------------------------------------
**[BJ] Pat, can you source the dates.
I can add the following on the James Sheppard m. Janette Riddle
"SC DAR Traveling Library, 1939-1942" Book F now permanently housed in the SC
DAR Library in Camden SC at the Camden Archives and Museum I found the
following DAR record that seems to tie in with this Lewis and the Riddle and
Sheppard families.
Revolutionary Ancestor Sheppard, James Member's name: Mrs. R. D. Wright
Jasper Chapter, Newberry SC. Nat'l #86939
Rev. Solider James Sheppard b 1737 d 1791 married 1759 Jannet Riddle b 1742 d.
1820 the daughter of William Riddle of Orangeburg.
James Sheppard and his son James Sheppard Jr served with Capt. Philmon Water's
Co. of SC Troops.
Could they be the parents of Jeanette Sheppard who married Lewis Coursey? Part
of the Early Orangeburg District became a part of Newberry County ca 1785,
according to "The Formation of Counties in SC" published by the SC Dept of
Archives and History.
---------------------------------------------
Children of James of 1790:
1. Frances Sheppard abt 1759 marr.#1 Jacob Gilder #2 Joshua Edwards. marr abt
1790. Note* Lewis Coursey helped her obtain widow's pension.
---------------------------------------------
**Billie's notes: In Newberry co. Wills, Book A. in the files of Jacob Guilder
pays Lewis Coursey - signs a rect. in Columbia for 6 years interest 5/7/1790.
Andreas says that Lewis did not serve in Rev, probably too young. How did
Lewis connect to Frances Sheppard? There must be a family connection since Pat
found evidence that he helped Frances get her pension.
DAR records, Mrs. Sallie Strother Hollingsworth, NSDAR#10750, Old 96 Chapter,
Edgefield , SC,, Feb 21, 1914 calls her Frances Joyce Sheppard, and state that
this same Frances Sheppard married William Augustus Strother, then Benjamin
Culpepper. But I don't have her attached to James of 1790. However, I note
below, child 4 is just called Joyce and is listed married to Strother and
Culpepper. so...... two folks or just one??
---------------------------------------------
2. William Sheppard abt 1760
3. James Sheppard, Jr.
4. Joyce Sheppard b. Dec 29, 1770, d. 1841 marr #1 Adair #2 Strother #3
Benjamin Culpepper [BJ **See Powell/Riddle/Sheppard info. at the end of the
message.
5. Sarah Sheppard 1772
6. Roseanne Sheppard 1773
7. Honorius Sheppard 1778 Note: named for Honorius Powell a kinsman [BJ -
**see the Riddle/Powell/Sheppard outline later which contains desc. of
Honorious Powell.]
I have two books that help with references:
The Dodgen Story By Mary Dodgen Few (my distant cousin)
Laurens and Newberry Counties, SC:
Saluda and Little River Settlements 1749-1775
It would seem that all the people you have mentioned were of a later
generation.
Let me know if I can do any look-ups for you.
Regards
Pat

**My additional notes on some of these folks:
A History of Edgefield Co,by John Chapman p. 398 - SHEPPARD - James Sheppard,
father of Honorable J. C. Sheppart was a native of Newberry Co. Moved to EC
as a young man. married 2) M. Mobley (mother of J.C. or wife?? recheck [this
surname shows up with Lewis Coursey in early Court records]. Is this that John
Sheppard?
Hope Creasman has this family in her family, but I don't have sources

Family Bible Records, compiled by Old 96th Dist Ch, SCGS, 1992, p. 128 Adams
Family Bible. states that one Savannah L. Sheppard b. ca 1836 was the daughter
of James Sheppard. She married William Wright Adams b.ca 1820 d. 1876.
Savannah d. January 04, 1856 and is buried in Edgefield Village Cem., Edgefield
Co., SC.
As I have worked in bits and pieces on this family trying to connect Lewis
Coursey of Newberry to the Lewis Coursey of the 1790 Edgefield Cem. and the
Lewis Coursey who married Jeanette Riddle, it seems to me that what I read
contains so much difference of opinion that there are several James Sheppards
that either I am mixing up or the data has been mixed up prior to my checking
them out.
The following is a posting to the Riddle list that came to me because it
contained my key search word.Coursey.
Match: Coursey or deCoursey

Pat, what I would love is a listing of the source data on your earlier folks
used by authors of "The Dodgen Story" & "Saluda and Little River Settlements
1749-1775" and information down a couple of generations in outline form with
dates that are available to see if I can use it to attach some of the other SC
Sheppards in the right generations. As you can see, there are either big
conflicts, or there are several James Sheppards that need to be sorted out in
my data. I have not seriously searched deeds, wills, equity records, and other
court records on them. Others who have done so may be able to sort this out,
but I have only been sent names, no proofs. Except for the following info:
I am seeking permission from another researcher who sent me some info. on LEWIS
SHEPERD, father of Judge Lewis SHEPHERD. If I receive that permission I will
forward it to all.
