Hi,
I have a greate grandmother was a Mary Jane Leahy, but I have seen
spellings of Leahey and Lahey and believe them to be the same. She died six
months after the birth of my grandfather and thus I do not know much about her
other than she was not from the Codroy Valley. It was said by one of my aunts
she was from the east coast. If you cuold point me in the right direction to
finding her family I would be most thankful. Have listed her children below.

I can tell you what it says about the name in Seary's book of
Newfoundland names if you do not have it. Although the name is found in
Newfoundland it is not traced back by any of the genealogist I have listed and
thus is thought to be a variant of the sirname of Ireland Lahy, and is used
synonymously with (O)Leahy. MacLysaght traced the name (O)Leahy in CO. Cork,
Kerry and Tipperary.

A couple of ealy instances include; William of Ireland settled in Cape
Broyle in 1790. Also Patrick married in St. John's in 1754, Mary Lahey of
Trinity Parish (CO. Waterford), married St. John's 1813: Edward Lahee of
Harbour Grace 1816. William Lahy from Ireland of King's Cove. Edward Leahy or
Lahy of Hearts Content and lastly Micheal of Heart's Desire in 1871. I have a
couple more Lahey/Leahey/ Leahy names and places.
