Hello listers,
Yesterday I was loking at the Mancetter baptism register at Atherstone
library checking on baptisms concerning a family named Jeffcoate in which I
am interested.
One such entry concerning Thomas Jefcoate is given in Familysearch/IGI as
28th July 1784, but at first I was unable to locate the entry in the actual
register.
However, I searched forwards and found the relevant entry almost two years
further on. The baptism entry was there with a note to say "and received
into the church 4th June 1786", and listed amongst the June 1786 entries.
I have not come across this practice before, and I wonder if anyone can
explain this business of being received into the church, and why baptism
details were not given until received into the church, in this case almost
two years later.
I did note several other such entries from around the same period, but this
is the only example in the Jeffcoate family in which I am interested which
comprises of ten children.
Any ideas?
Daryl Jones.
